Wedding Anniversary Gifts by Year, and Why Time Together Might Be the Best One

Anniversary lists are useful. Time together is better under a glowing sunset.

Short summer reads…

Every January someone asks what the traditional gift is for this year's number. The lists are fun, and they can spark an idea. They can also turn an anniversary into a scavenger hunt for an object neither of you needs. Here's the traditional UK-style list for reference, and a gentler suggestion underneath it.

Modern lists vary. Treat them as inspiration, not homework. My post on milestone wedding anniversaries goes deeper on the big numbers.

Why Time Together Wins

Objects gather dust. An evening set aside for the two of you gathers memory. That might be a long walk, a weekend with phones put away, letters swapped at sunset, or a personalised ceremony. Leon Bagnall Experiences also keeps stories going through the Love Story Registry, which is open to past couples with a free year to claim.

I don't focus on anniversary experiences as gifts from other people. They're time for the couple themselves. If that idea resonates, read an anniversary experience just for the two of you and browse the anniversary offerings.

Making the List Personal

If tin or silver sparks an idea, use it lightly: a colour, a texture, a single object that you'll actually use. If the list feels cold, ignore it. The couples I work with who seem happiest on their anniversary are usually the ones who protected a few hours for themselves, not the ones who found the perfect catalogue match.

A sunset ceremony is one way to do that. So is a couples' photography session from £95.00, with Polaroids the same evening. Neither needs to be organised as a gift from someone else to be meaningful. They need to be chosen by the two of you.

Use the list if it sparks joy. Then give each other something that can't be wrapped.

Give each other hours that can't be wrapped, and keep the list as decoration rather than duty.
