An Anniversary Experience Just for the Two of You

An anniversary doesn't need an audience, just under a glowing sunset.

Short summer reads…

Most anniversaries get squeezed in somewhere between work, family and the weekly shop. There's a card, maybe a meal and then life carries on. That's perfectly lovely, but I think a wedding anniversary can be something more, and the best version I know is a simple one: an experience for the two of you, and nobody else.

Not a Present, an Experience

I don't really focus on booking this as a gift. To me it's an experience for the couple, a chance to put the two of you at the centre of something for a change. There's no pressure to impress anyone, and no guest list to think about. It's about being together, with the setting sun doing a good deal of the work.

That difference matters to me. A present is something you unwrap and put on a shelf. An experience is something you walk through together, and remember. Whether you're marking five years or fifty, the aim is the same: an evening that belongs only to you.

Focusing Solely on Each Other

So much of married life is shared with other people: children, friends, colleagues, relatives. An anniversary experience flips that. For a while, there's only you and your partner. I'm there as your celebrant and photographer, but my job is to blend in and let you get on with it. If you'd like to see what that looks like, my post on what happens at a Twilight ceremony walks you through it.

Time to Connect

When did the two of you last have a proper conversation without a screen in the room? Time to connect is what I hope couples take from this. The personalised sunset ceremony is written around your story, so it brings back the little details you've half forgotten. That might be how you met, the first place you lived or the thing you still laugh about.

Then there's the part you don't have to plan, because the Polaroids are handed to you the same evening. You can hold a piece of the experience before you've even said goodnight.

I'd also encourage you to think about what you'd like to say to each other. It doesn't need to be grand. A few honest lines about what the last year has meant to you can be more moving than a speech, and I'm there to help you shape them.

Forget the Day's Work for an Evening

A working week leaves a lot of loose ends, and it's hard to let go of them when you're at your kitchen table. A sunset experience asks you to leave them at the door for an evening. Or, if you stretch it into something longer, for a weekend.

You choose the place and the date within the summer months, so it fits around your life rather than the other way round. Sunsets are at their best in summer, and Twilight Ceremonies runs then for that reason.

If you're someone who finds it hard to switch off, planning ahead helps. Put the date in the diary early, tell the people who need to know that you're unavailable and leave your phone in your pocket. The photographs will be waiting for you afterwards, and the world will still be there in the morning.

How the Evening Unfolds

It's simpler than you might think:

  • We talk beforehand, and I write a ceremony from your story.

  • On the evening, we meet at the place you've chosen, in good time before the sun goes down.

  • You share your ceremony, with candid photographs taken as it happens.

  • You finish with Polaroids in your hands before you head home.

You can see the full set of options on the offerings page, and if you'd like a quieter evening with no ceremony, my couples sunset photoshoot post explains how that works.

Your Place, Wherever It Is

The place you choose can be a headland you love in North Wales, a spot from your honeymoon or a corner of the UK that means something to the two of you. If you're thinking even further afield, tell me and we'll talk about whether it's possible. The best place is the one that feels like yours, whether that's somewhere you've been a hundred times or somewhere you've always meant to visit. When you're ready to talk, you can get in touch here.

Take the evening for yourselves and let the rest of the week wait.
