Is a Vow Renewal Legally Binding, and Other Questions Couples Ask

Got a few questions first? Let's answer them under a glowing sunset.

Short summer reads…

Every year, couples message me with the same handful of questions before they book a vow renewal. Is it legal? Do we need to do any paperwork? Does it have to be on our anniversary? They're sensible questions, and they deserve straight answers.

Here are the ones I hear most often, answered the way I'd answer them over a coffee.

Is a Vow Renewal Legally Binding?

No. A vow renewal is a celebration of a marriage that already exists, not a new legal event. If you're already married, there's nothing to sign and nothing to register, and it doesn't change or replace your marriage certificate. It's the part of marriage that's about the two of you, rather than the law.

If you'd like to check the legal side of marriage yourself, GOV.UK explains who can marry or form a civil partnership in England and Wales.

Do We Need to Give Notice or Book a Register Office?

No again. Giving notice is what couples do before they get married, and GOV.UK says to give notice at least 29 days before the ceremony. A vow renewal has no notice period, no paperwork to file and no need for an approved venue. Councils do offer renewal ceremonies of their own, but with a celebrant you can choose a beach, a headland or a quiet bit of the mountains.

Does It Have to Be on Our Anniversary?

Not at all. Twilight Ceremonies runs in the summer months, so we choose your date for the best light and the best sunset rather than the date on your certificate. If your anniversary falls in the middle of winter, you're in good company: save the celebration for the summer and enjoy the sunset. Season I of Twilight Ceremonies explains how the summer season works.

Where Can We Hold It?

Anywhere that feels like you, as long as it's somewhere we're allowed to stand and the sun can set behind you. My locations page lists favourites including West Shore and the Great Orme in Llandudno, South Stack, Trearddur Bay and Penmon on Anglesey, and the mountains of Snowdonia.

One practical point: some beautiful places are looked after by organisations that have their own rules, so it's always worth checking whether an organised ceremony needs permission before your heart is set on a spot. I'll help you with that when we choose where to stand.

What Are the Options, and What Do They Cost?

I offer three ways to celebrate, and the prices are as shown on my offerings page:

  • Renewal of Vows (£450): a personalised sunset ceremony where you refresh your promises, with 10 Polaroids handed to you the same evening.

  • Milestone Ceremony (from £450): a personalised sunset ceremony to mark a life event or a big anniversary, with 10 Polaroids to keep.

  • Couples Sunset Shoot (from £95): no ceremony, just an evening of candid photography with 10 Polaroids and 60 digital photographs.

Optional extras are £50 each, such as a video and audio recording, extra candid photographs or drone coverage where the location allows.

Can We Renew Our Vows If We Eloped or Married Abroad?

Yes. It doesn't matter whether you married in a register office, a church, on a mountainside or on holiday. A vow renewal celebrates the promises you've already made, wherever you made them. Couples who eloped with me come back to Twilight Ceremonies too, and you can read how that looks in Penny and James's story.

If you're not married yet and you're wondering how the legal side works in Wales, my read on whether eloping is legal in Wales on Elope with Leon explains the register office and celebrant routes.

What Happens If It Rains?

Summer weather in Wales can still change, so we always keep a back-up spot in mind. Part of planning with me is agreeing what we'd do on the night if the sky has other ideas, so you never have to make that decision in a hurry.

What Do We Keep Afterwards?

Your Polaroids are handed to you the same evening, so you walk away with something real in your hands. Your photographs then join your Love Story Album, online and printed, so your anniversary sits alongside every other chapter of your story. It's a lovely thing to flick back through on a quiet evening years from now.

Do We Have to Write Brand New Vows?

Not unless you'd like to. Some couples read their original vows again, keep the promises that still ring true and add a few new ones. Others start with a blank page and write about the life they've built since the wedding: the home, the children, the adventures and the hard bits you've come through together. There's no right answer, only what sounds like you.

Who Writes the Words?

I do, with you. Every ceremony is written from scratch, with no copy and paste, because no two marriages are the same. We work together over online and face-to-face meetings in the months leading up to summer, and you can tune in and out as your life allows. If you'd like help with what to say, my guide to planning a vow renewal in North Wales goes through it step by step.

Still Have a Question?

Message me and I'll answer it properly. You can speak to me about your ceremony before you commit to anything, and there's no pressure to book.

The paperwork was done years ago, so all that's left is the sunset.
